When Eck Robertson made the first recording of "Sally Goodin" in 1922, the violin’s popularity as a musical instrument soared. After all, with only four strings, this little gem could not only play rhythm, but could also tow two melodies at the same time. And, it’s portable!

Hello Fiddlers,
Shasta Camp; The Northwest String Summit in Oregon; RockyGrass and the RockyGrass Academy in Lyons, Colorado; all completed!
The Big Chill Band ( Mr Sun & Emy Phelps & Tony Trischka ) at RG
Swannanoa Fiddle Week was a fabulous convocation of picking geniuses, and some of the most wonderful students to be found outside the hallowed Artistworks halls. I had tons of fun with fellow Profs Tony trischka, Mike Marshall, and other great friends such as Matt Flinner, Emory Lester, Mark Johnson, Bruce Molsky, and I got an incredible interview for us with the phenomenal jazz fiddler Billy Contreras.
Some great jamming and visiting with Fiddle Schoolers Ryan, Joel, and Woolybear, and a totally wild ConcertWindow broadcast... the first from Rockygrass! And a great interview with the amazing Irish fiddler Adam Agee is in the can, dealing with the many intricacies of Irish fiddle ornamentation.
Lots of exciting things have already happened this year: The Sedona Bluegrass Festival, a great trip to the Yukon Territory, the Strings Without Boundaries fiddle camp in Washington, and the Berklee Roots Weekend Workshop.... I'm getting better at sleeping on an airplane.
thanks for being here, folks! I have some down time in Nashville, and will respond to as many video submissions as I can this week!

New Special Guest Fiddlers: Mike Barnett and Tim O’Brien
As some of you may have noticed, we've added an 8-part interview that Darol recently recorded with young all-star fiddler Mike Barnett. Mike recorded his first fiddle album at age 14 and was playing shows with bluegrass legend Jesse McReynolds at age 15. He currently plays in a number of different groups including the David Grisman Quintet, The Deadly Gentlemen (with David Grisman's son Samson on bass), and also plays fiddle on Scott Law's new album and Tony Trischka's new album. Darol has known Mike for a long time, and having played in the David Grisman Quintet himself for years, the two had plenty to talk about. Find the interview in Music+ area in the "Special Guests" section.
…but wait, there's more! We also just uploaded a video of Darol Anger and Tim O'Brien playing a duo fiddle version of "The Crossing," and they also talk about the backstory behind the tune. Find this one also in the "Special Guests" area of Music+ under "Darol Talks with Tim O'Brien."
New Fiddle Guest: Lena Jonsson
...and we're back with an announcement about a new fiddle guest: Swedish fiddler Lena Jonsson. Lena has been playing fiddle since she was six, and specializes in Swedish and Scandinavian fiddling. This series of new fiddle lessons includes several performances (including Darol on the Mandocello for some), a multi-part discussion, and also Lena teaching a traditional Polska tune. Fiddle Lesson – Practicing for Pitch
"There are very few things in this world more annoying than a fiddle played out of tune." - Darol Anger
Getting your fiddle in tune is something that is so important, and unfortunately, often overlooked. As Darol says in the fiddle lesson here, it's something you'll be working on for your entire fiddle life. It's a never-ending struggle, even for Darol who's been playing fiddle for almost 50 years.
