Jazz Guitar Lesson: Soloing Ideas for Miles Davis’ “So What”
Miles Davis’ 1959 record release, Kind of Blue, is still revered to this day as one of the most prolific jazz albums of all time. Featuring John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley on alto saxophone, Paul Chambers on upright bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums, and either Bill Evans or Wynton Kelly on piano (depending on the track), Miles’ sextet on Kind of Blue was composed of some of the most admired musicians in jazz history. It’s not a wonder that after more than 60 years, Kind of Blue is still one of the most popular and critically acclaimed jazz albums of all time.

Mike Marshall & Tony Trischka Talk Brazilian Choro Music
Mike Marshall is a virtuosic Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist known particularly for his prowess on the mandolin. Mike began his career primarily in the world of bluegrass, performing as a member of the legendary David Grisman Quintet from 1985-1900. Alongside bluegrass icons like Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, Tony Rice, Mark O’Connor, Stéphane Grappelli, and Darol Anger, Mike pushed the boundaries of modern bluegrass and the role that the mandolin plays within the ensemble. Later, Mike and Darol went on to form their own acts—Montreaux and super-group Psychograss (which featured Tony Trischka on banjo and Todd Phillips on upright bass). All three groups made considerable contributions to the sound of bluegrass as a whole and received accolades from fans and critics alike as a result.

Read MoreElectric Bass Lesson: Arpeggios for Common Chords Found in Jazz
Three fundamental elements define the structure of all western music—scales, chords, and arpeggios. Chords highlight the most critical notes of a scale and do so by sounding these prominent tonalities in unison. Arpeggios, on the other hand, outline the tonalities present within a chord individually, allowing players to create melodic lines that draw attention to the most critical notes within a composition’s chord changes. Jazz music, in particular, is known for utilizing very complex harmonies. So, sometimes crafting arpeggios can feel a bit daunting for jazz musicians of all instruments and levels.
Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar Lesson: Linear Tapping
When players think of two-hand tapping techniques, they most commonly associate them with the face-melting electric guitar solos produced by rock gods like Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and more. However, believe it or not, two-hand tapping was a technique that was first pioneered on acoustic instruments.
