Ukulele Lesson: An Introduction to Basic Strumming
One of the beauties of stringed instruments, including the ukulele, is that there are a myriad of different ways that they can be played to create a wide variety of tonal textures and stylistic aesthetics. From fingerpicking to strumming, from single-note lines to chord-melody, there are so many ways to utilize the ukulele in different musical contexts.

Mike Marshall & Darol Anger Release New Live Album, “Ook’n’m”
On July 20, 2023, world-renowned mandolinist, Grammy-nominated musician, and ArtistWorks bluegrass mandolin instructor, Mike Marshall, released his latest live album, Ook’n’m: Live at the Old Town School of Folk Music 2001, featuring fellow ArtistWorks instructor Darol Anger on fiddle, Todd Phillips on upright bass, and the legendary Tony Rice on guitar.
Rock Guitar Lesson: String Skipping
One of the most critical elements of the shred guitar aesthetic is the quick and fluid transition from notes in the higher registers to those in the lower register and vice versa. Oftentimes, rock guitarists will execute these transitions through the use of arpeggios, outlining the song’s harmonic progressions through fast melodic lines that feature consecutive ascending or descending chord tones. However, it is also very common for guitars performing in the shred style to jump directly between notes in the higher and lower registers. Executing this properly often requires a deceptively difficult technique called string skipping.

ArtistWorks Instructors Nominated for 2023 IBMA Awards
This morning, the International Bluegrass Music Association announced the nominees for this year's 34th annual 2023 IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards. Among the fantastic group of talented artists nominated for awards are six of the master musicians that teach bluegrass here at ArtistWorks: bluegrass mandolin icon Sierra Hull, flatpick guitar titans Bryan Sutton and Chris Eldridge, upright bass master Missy Raines, dobro and resophonic guitar virtuoso Andy Hall, and ArtistWorks’ newest instructor, banjo guru Alison Brown.
Grey Fox Fester Fun
A beautiful long day at the Grey Fox Music Festival in New England with my increasingly excellent band Mr Sun, and leading a monster jam set Satuday night that included The Henhouse Prowlers band, banjo stars Wes Corbett and Trey Wellington, raconteur and cultural icon Joe Newberry, guitarist Scott Gates , mandolinist/vocalists A.J. Lee and the brilliant fellow Artistworks Professor Siarra Hull, Bassist & MVP Nate Sabat, and fiddlers moi, Avery Merritt and of course the President: Sam Bush. To lead a jam with these folks, just get them on stage and then stand back!
