Drummerworld has published this excellent video of Nathan East playing with his band Fourplay, which also consists of Bob James on keyboards, Chuck Loeb on guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums. Needless to say, this is a group of serious musicians. But don’t let that fool you – they still know how to have a good time. Check out this performance recorded live at the Leverkusener Festtage in Germany last year: not only do they make it look easy, but you can tell they’re deep in the pocket and having a blast. Pay close to attention to Nathan’s call and response with Bob James… that’s how it done folks! The tune was written by guitarist Chuck Loeb, which he calls “The 3rd Degree” in honor of himself being the 3rd guitarist to play with the group (previous guitarists were Lee Ritenour and later Larry Carlton). As Harvey Mason notes at the end, “I think he’s the one!”.
