Herb Ellis Passes Away.
We are all saddened to learn of the passing of Herb Ellis, a true jazz guitar great, who died Sunday March 28, 2010, at the age of 88. Herb had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Born Mitchell Herbert Ellis in 1921, Herb had a long and esteemed career that included a notable five-year stint as the guitarist for the Oscar Peterson Trio (1953-1958). Many of you know the recordings he made with a jazz guitar “super group” called “Great Guitars” which included Herb, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, and Charlie Byrd. If you’ve never heard them, they are worth checking out. Herb’s collaborators are simply a “who’s who” of the formative and most influential years of jazz. He was very generous, happy to give the spotlight to others.
