the first DA Global Fiddle retreat is complete.
Greetings, Fiddlers!
October has been an amazing month: Two Orchestra solo appearances, my new recording (MUSIC OF OUR PEOPLE) getting into the top 5 in airplay on American Folk Radio, my first month living back in the West, and this new venture: my first foray into the scary and exciting world of Fiddle Camp-Land.
Yes folks, I threw my own darn fiddle party, and just as with any party, you don’t know if anyone will come, or enjoy. But… it worked!
The first ever Darol Anger Global Fiddle Retreat is history, and folks seemed to really have a great time! It was small and very cozy, but we also had the incredible award-winning youthful fiddler Annie Staninec and Singer-Songwriter-Creativity Guru Emy Phelps to coach the participants. Thanks also to the generosity of Jim Dunlop and D’Addario Strings for providing great gift bags stuffed with super-useful goodies!

A little bit of an Irish Summer in Colorado.
Darol Anger's unlisted 7-part YouTube interview with the incredible Irish fiddler Adam Agee is now available exclusively to Artistworks Fiddle students.
Irish-style fiddling, like Ireland, is full of amazing twists, turns, and back roads leading to unexpected, highly detailed vistas. Darol interviews one of the most interesting Irish fiddlers out there: Adam Agee. Adam grew up in America, and his choice to pursue Irish traditional music arose purely from a his love for, and resonance with, the Irish sound. ?Over decades, at Alasdair Fraser's Valley of the Moon fiddle camp and at various workshops in America and Ireland, where he studied with many of today's greatest living tradition-bearers, such as Martin Hayes, Liz Carroll, and others.
Adam's devotion to detail make him an ideal instructor of this style, and you can see in these videos how he approaches an authentic Irish fiddle sound. Darol and Adam geek out on slides, cuts, rolls, trills, and other musical emements of this amazing fiddle style.
These videos were shot outdoors in the aftermath of Colorado's famed Rockygrass Festival, and the lighting and sound are not always perfect, so we're making it available as an unlisted series only for Artistworks Fiddle School students.

Bluegrass music was built upon historic performances by the creators of the style: Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, Vassar Clements, Chubby Wise, Benny Martin, and many others. We study those performances to master the style. And in Bluegrass music, as in Bebop, Rock, and many other genres, quoting a performance from the original recording is considered not only a good idea, it’s a badge of knowledge and belonging, and a way of connecting the past with the present. Knowing these genre-defining solos can help you develop subtle and nuanced musical commentaries on the original solo, and help you create your own accurate, original take on the entire style.
We've been releasing one solo a week and now they're finally all up there, it's a fiddle fest!
