Fiddle
A great little idea for your up-sliding bowgrip, and my Facebook Fiddle School Page!
Thanks to Lev Zhurbin for this cool idea for keeping your right hand from sliding up the bow in this hot, hot weather. All you need is a rubber band.
AND... I've instituted a Fiddle School Facebook Page for that info and posts which don't have to be private, and to introduce other fiddlers to this school.
enjoy!

Fiddle Lesson: Bow Speed, Pressure, & Placement with Darol Anger
There are three critical elements that define proper bowing technique that require close monitoring when learning to play the fiddle—bow speed, pressure, and placement. In this online fiddle lesson, master fiddler, ArtistWorks instructor, and founding member of the David Grisman Quintet, Darol Anger outlines the vast array of rich, complex tones that can be achieved on the fiddle by employing subtle nuances to the speed of the bow’s stroke, pressure of the bow on the strings, and the placement of the bow on the strings in relation to the bridge.

Guest Artistworks Fiddle Professor for March 2021: Bronwyn Keith-Hynes
Greetings, Fiddlers!
I’m arranging another treat for everyone this March: I’m going to have a Special Guest Fiddle Professor help teach y'all this month, somebody (as always) whose name you know and whose fiddling we love.
I’ve managed to convince incandescent fiddle star Bronwyn Keith-Hynes to participate in this Special Expanded Faculty Month as we all continue to hang at home.
8-28-20 Update: New Rockygrass 2019 Performance Video Part Added: “Death by Triple Fiddle”
The final song in this series "Death by Triple Fiddle" from Mike's performance with Edgar Meyer and George Meyer has now been added! You can watch the new video by using the Part Links below. Enjoy!
PARTS LIST
"East Tennesse Blues"
"Child's Play"
What makes a “great” fiddler?
It’s unmistakable, the sound of a great fiddler. So many wonderful musicians play the fiddle, all contributing their unique and precious voices to the great chorus… And then there’s that maybe three percent, the cream. What makes us pay a little closer attention to that special few?
Some have that uncanny precision. In the world of fiddling, it’s a rare and wonderful talent. Some listeners find it bracing, some find it hypnotic. To be able to trust a player’s unerring ability to put the note in perfect tune with everything else that’s going on is a special subliminal gift from the fiddler, saying, “I’ve worked hard, so you can relax!”
How about wit? Complete musical sentences, humor and surprise, so that we laugh out loud with a phrase that not only completes a story, but twists our expectations at the perfect spot. We’re entranced by thestoryteller, who has mastered the byways and backroad of their instrument and can not only go anywhere, but to the perfect, unexpected place, with a surprising vista or perfect tiny garden.
It’s not fiddling without a groove! From mere toe-wiggling to flopping around on the floor like a fish, we crave the quickening heart-race of the rhythmic rub of bow on string. It’s transcendent in a way that involves the whole body, and adjusts us better than chiropractic.

Stuck-At-Home Expanded Fiddler Faculty Month!
Greetings, You Fiddlers!
I’ve arranged a treat for everyone: I'm inviting some Super-Special Guest Fiddle Professors help teach this month, folks whose names you know and whose fiddling we love.
I’ve managed to convince fiddle stars Brittany Haas, Alex Hargreaves and Jenna Moynihan to participate in this Special Expanded Faculty Month as we all Shelter-At-Home.
They have each recorded a Special Guest Lesson which will be posted on my Artistworks.com Profile page.
And this month I’ll be soliciting YOUR Lesson Videos where you get to ask one of them to help critique your playing. These folks are all very kind, have taught many classes & clinics, and know a LOT about the ins and outs of their respective styles. And they all have that incredible “X” factor that makes their playing magically musical. And musically magical. And If this works well for everyone, we will extend the event into May!
